A place where there are all sorts of amazing diagnoses to give people who rub you the wrong way. At the same time, though, having a framework can help you understand people who have semi-pathological traits and characteristics and can actually make it more tolerable to cope with these people. The diagnostic bible of psychiatry is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual DSM , which is constantly being updated and revised.

The NPD symptoms must be sufficiently severe that they significantly impair the person’s capabilities to develop meaningful human relationships. Generally, the symptoms of NPD also impair the person’s psychological abilities to function, either at work, or school, or important social settings. The DSM-5 indicates that the traits manifested by the person must substantially differ from cultural norms, in order to qualify as symptoms of NPD. This sense of superiority may cause them to monopolize conversations or to become impatient or disdainful when others talk about themselves.
They tend to devalue, derogate, insult, and blame others, and they often respond to threatening feedback with anger and hostility. Also inherent in this process are the defense mechanisms of denial , idealization and devaluation. Only when these traits are inflexible, maladaptive, and persisting and cause significant functional impairment or subjective distress do they constitute narcissistic personality disorder. These individuals may be unwilling to compete or may refuse to take any risks in order to avoid appearing like a failure.
Environment Environmental and social factors are also thought to have a significant influence on the onset of NPD. Excessive praise for good behaviors or excessive criticism for bad behaviors in childhood. Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents, other family members, or peers.

Wednesday, February 25, Borderline personality disorder and sociopaths: This woman has a real sister with BPD and wrote a book based partially on her experiences. I say sister because unlike sociopaths, who are primarily male, BPDs are primarily female. But don’t underestimate her — she can be nefarious when she wants to be.
The BPD is a lot of things, but most interesting to me is the skill with which she sheds one skin after another. For narcissists the mirror is always pointed at themselves, but for BPDs the mirror is always pointed at others — allowing those around them to see exactly what they want to see. I was living like a trainee Stepford Wife Young and still experimenting with my sense of self, I was happy to pursue their pastimes, agree with their politics, even wear clothes they liked.
I’m always interested in other people’s hobbies, families and their lives – I suppose that’s why I’m a writer.

Character disorders, after all, are on a continuum; some are more acute or pathological than others. What stands out about the paranoid personality in relationships are the behaviors and how they make others feel. Over the years in researching my book, I collected the words that describe the paranoid personality based on what was reported by those that had lived with them or had been victimized by them.
There is wisdom in their unfiltered words — the words of those who have lived it in vivo. Here are some of their words, not all, that they used to describe this personality type from their experiences: Do I know someone like this? Does this sound like my boyfriend or spouse?
