The power cable is still nice and pliable.

Stromberg-Voisinet Aero- uke c. In , later president Henry Kay “Hank” Kuhrmeyer joined the company, and in , with the help of an investor, [9] he bought the company and started producing electric guitars and amplifiers. Activity on Kuhrmeyer-era — [ edit ] The company initially manufactured only traditional folk instruments,[ citation needed ] but eventually grew to make a wide variety of stringed instruments, including violins , cellos , banjos , upright basses —and a variety of different types of guitars , including classical guitars , lap steel guitars , semi-acoustic guitars , and solid body electrics.

Some of Kay’s lower-grade instruments were marketed under the Knox and Kent brand names. In addition to manufacturing instruments for sale under its own brands, Kay was also a prolific manufacturer of “house branded” guitars and folk instruments for other Chicago-based instrument makers and, at times, for major department stores including Sears and Montgomery Ward.

Ampegs can be divided into six distinct groups for dating purposes: Each group uses a unique serialization scheme that can be used to assist in dating the amps, but in many cases, it is the features and characteristics of the amps that determine the year of manufacture.

Electronic Industries Association EIA codes can also be very useful for giving clues as to an amp’s age. These codes can be found on speakers, transformers, pots, capacitors, and multi-section electrolytic “can” caps. Of course, these codes are only applicable to original components, not replacement parts. Ampeg amplifiers, especially the high-powered amps such as the SVT and V-series, contain lethal voltages even when unplugged and turned off.

It’s like a wild beast”. You amps just KILL man. I just used a Ric12 during an all day recording session. No other amps I’ve played give me such control The attention to detail beyond compare”. The hemp-coned speaker is killer and I can’t wait to break it in.

Harmony’s Other instruments. I have been trying top keep you up to date with The Harmony Guitar’s assortment of Guitars. With the new 5th edition of the Blue Book of Guitars there is finally a coherent documentation of the different models of guitars made by the Harmony Guitar Co. of Chicago.

Lay down the song you strum. And rest yourself ‘neath the strength of strings. By the time I was 12 there was no question about it, I had to have a guitar. Looking back, there were some other fine amplifiers that were probably in the same price that came with finer construction, but a Silvertone amplifier was so accessible. The inner working may have been slightly different, but they were well made. Heck we had dials on our telephones instead of buttons. Twice a year we would get a big Sears catalogue i n the mail.

Some lucky folks got both Sears and Montgomery Wards catalogs. Of course we all wanted the biggest and loudest amplifier we could afford.

These guitars already have a great vintage vibe with an authentic looking two-tone sunburst gloss finish, parchment parts, and tinted neck, so the vintage logo is icing on the cake. Other features include C-shaped maple neck with maple fingerboard and modern 9. Like the early vintage models this guitar also has stacked knobs with a volume and tone on each pot. The tone pots are the click type, rather than a smooth taper; nice touch.

It might seem odd to have a Jaguar logo but we wanted to have a little fun with it and the two models are very close in styling, especially on these Vintage Modified models.

The pic looks like a dual 6V6 or dual EL84 amp with a 6×4 rectifier and 5 preamp tubes.

That’s a pretty fancy tube circuit. The amp has 7 knobs and I’d expect it is a two channel amp with Vibrato. The speaker is definitely a replacement – looks like a Jensen C12Q. I would expect this to be a great sounding amplifier – expecially if it has original trannie’s, NOS or original tubes and a recent cap job. But there is only one way to find out:

Kay Musical Instrument Company

HawkeyeKane 2 items This is a neat amp. I picked this one up at my local music store, and traded one of my other amps in for it. It has an output somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 to 30 watts, a 15″ alnico speaker which looks to be a CTS make, simple volume, bass, and treble controls, and a convenient two prong electrical outlet on the back for any effects devices one might have wanted to use back in the day.

Supro Triple-Tone Guitar (Model ) Posted on January 8, July 9, by drowninginguitars Posted in Guitars Tagged s, Airline, This serial number points to the year , and a good resource for dating Valco amps and guitars can be found here.

It seems to me like the Valco guitars were competing with some of the more well-established guitar brands of the time. Also the binding on the fiberglass guitars can sometimes deteriorate. But the Valcos did and do sound VERY good, and some their designs and art deco touches were very creative and do stand the test of time. Touches on this Triple Tone like the raised double pick guards, the stair step tailpiece, and the butterfly key tuners all add into the pleasing aesthetic nature of these guitars.

Well, at least to my eye! Although their sound is just as good as anything the big boys out out! Where I think all Supro guitars shine is the awesome pickups designed by Mr. I talked about these pickups before in my Supro Lexington article, and if you have a few spare hours, feel free to digest the patent information regarding these cool pickups. These are some of the best single coils ever made, period!

Speaking of humbuckers, the best ones always sound like really good, fat single coils. And these sound just like that! Scott pointed out that under the covers the structure is similar to Grestch Hi Lo Trons, but with much more wire. Early on in my guitar playing days I was able to buy a Custom Craft Valco guitar, almost identical to the Supro Lexington.

That was the guitar that got me hooked on the Valco sound, and soon after I bought a fiberglass Dual Tone.

Kay Musical Instrument Company was a musical instrument manufacturer of the United States, in operation from the s until the s.. Kay was established in in Chicago, Illinois, by Henry Kay Kuhrmeyer, from the assets of the former Stromberg-Voisinet (founded as Groeschel Mandolin Company in ).. Kay offered their first electric guitar in — five years after the Rickenbacker.

The company is famous as the first manufacturer of resonator guitars, which were hugely popular in blues and a bit later bluegrass music. National merged with the Dobro company, another maker of resonator guitars, around to form the National Dobro Corporation. The company began producing electric instruments in the s that included electric guitars, lap steels, mandolins and amplifiers. These pre-war electric instruments are fairly rare today, though the lap steels pop up with some regularity.

The archtop bodies for the guitars were sourced from Regal and then from Kay, but the electronics were developed and manufactured by National-Dobro. National-Dobro was reorganized into the Valco company in Manufacturing of resonator guitars ceased with the introduction of metal rationing in World War II, and the focus was placed on Spanish- and Hawaiian-style guitars and amplifiers. Starting in , a new serial number system was adopted that allows for reasonably accurate dating of instruments.

Valco quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of lap steels, alongside Magnatone, Gibson and Rickenbacker, and the company also sold acoustic guitars with National necks and bodies by Gibson. A number of electric archtop models were sold with bodies by Gibson, Harmony and Kay, but fitted with Valco-made pickups, hardware and necks.

Guitars sold under other brand names, such as Oahu, generally followed Supro stylings. These were fairly plain, understated instruments, however, so in Valco introduced the National model , also called the Town and Country. The solid maple body had ivory-colored binding and a matching plate covering the back.

Return to the Main Index. Sometimes there just isn’t enough information on electric instruments and amps to allow them to be properely dated. And many people ask me to try and determine the year of their old amplifier, or to help them with the year of their older off-brand electric guitar. Since I primarily collect amps by Fender, and guitars by Gibson, Fender, Martin, National, Epiphone, Gretsch and Rickenbacker, I really can’t help them with these other less popular brands.

As you have probably noticed, there is plenty of information here to help date the brands that I am interested in. But where does that leave everyone else? Well I’m not one to leave you out in the informational cold, so here’s something that I use quite often in dating amplifiers and electric guitars. It’s called the “source-date code”, and it can help determine the approximate age of an electric instrument by the date its components were manufactured. Source-Date Codes On American made vintage gear, the pots and speakers provide an excellent opportunity to date a piece of equipment by referencing their “source-date code”.

The source-date code found on pots and speakers gives the manufacturer and date roughly when the components were made. It may have been some time before the part was installed at the factory, but it still provides a good approximation of when the gear was made. The source-date code will signify the earliest possible date that the instrument or amp could have been made. This isn’t going to be exact, but it will give you a “ball-park” age.

And remember, even the dates indicated by the pots aren’t that exact.
